HairDirections Hit List: success in the salon and beyond

Do you want to make more money in less time? Reduce work stress? Grow your clientele? Optimize your salon schedule and environment?  The HairDirections Hit List was created to help you achieve greater success in the salon and beyond.  We will show you simple, easy to implement techniques that can have a dramatic impact on the success of your career.  You will walk away with an organized plan that you can immediately start using called the HairDirections Hit List.

The material taught in this class can be used on an individual level by service providers and booth renters, or put into motion salon-wide by managers and owners.  It’s presented using real world examples, demonstrations, colorful imagery, short video clips, a touch of humor, and much more to keep you engaged, entertained, and on track.  The HairDirections Hit List was designed to help you:

  • Reignite your motivation and enthusiasm

  • Analyze your salon environment

  • Operate more efficiently so you can work smarter, not harder

  • Grow your clientele and bring home a bigger paycheck

  • Discover what is working for you, and equally important, what isn’t

  • Understand what clients are REALLY thinking, including what they would pay more for and language that they respond to – featuring candid video footage of clients giving us the dish

  • See eye-opening data that you cannot afford to ignore

  • Minimize energy leaches, and focus on what you’re passionate about

  • Utilize a fresh approach to service and retail sales that is natural and comfortable for both you and your client

  • Make your money work for you by using simple techniques that they would never tell you about in beauty school

  • Organize your Hit List to compliment your personality, and infuse it in to your life

This class dives into several important topics such as Know Your Numbers, Rebook Rate, Retail to Service Ratio, Price Increases, Average Hourly Intake, Average Ticket, Financial Fabulousness, and Customizing your Hit List to work for you. While you may already be familiar with some of these topics, we will investigate and apply them in new and interesting ways to create and elevate your Hit List.

Color Geekier: explore your haircolor genius

Color Geek is one of our most popular classes.  People liked it so much, that we decided to go Geekier!  Color Geekier combines the art & science of advanced haircolor methods to expand your color skills, enhance your color art, and increase your color business.  This new class has been expanded so we can really get into the Geekier side of haircolor, including more examples, in-depth descriptions and explanations, and answers to some of the most frequently asked color questions that stylists have.

  • Developed and presented by haircolor expert Kristin Allison

  • This course is NOT brand specific. All stylists will benefit regardless of the haircolor line they use

  • Learn techniques to increase the performance of your haircolor line

  • Create haircolor formulations that achieve fabulous results on unruly hair

  • Utilize techniques to avoid common haircolor problems, and methods to fix them if they occur

  • Apply art and science to conquer even the most complicated haircolor challenges

Color Geekier’s popularity has mirrored that of the original Color Geek class. People seem to love it and are shocked at the amount of useful information that can be packed into 2 hours. Learning new techniques is fun, but if you don’t get accurate and predictable color, know how to fix color problems, if the color fades or damages the clients hair, then what good is knowing the latest trend?  If you truly want to become a color expert you must understand and master the material taught in this class.  Topics that will be covered include: Color Geekier Facts, Hair Color Foundations, Developers, Haircolor Challenges, Brassiness, Fading, Hot Roots, Grey Coverage, Color Balancing, Brown-Outs, Fillers, High-lift Blondes, Color Formulation and more.  Are you ready to go Geekier!

The classes listed below satisfy the NEW 2 hour Ohio safety and sanitation CE requirement.

Cosmetology Kaleidoscope

You asked for it, so we created it! This class covers a variety of topics that we have received numerous requests for. Practical information that you can easily apply to the salon environment will be presented, including:

  • What do clients really think about sanitation in the salon? The HairDirections Lab Experiment captured candid client answers to this question through interviews, group talk-show-style sessions and surveys. Very interesting.

  • The implications of allowing a Wild Child to roam free in the salon can be grave. They can destroy property, get hurt, and ruin the tranquil environment that you have worked so hard to create. This segment provides simple methods to help manage a Wild Child without offending the parents.

  • Most of us will encounter head lice at some point in our career. We will give licensees tools to help identify and properly respond to the presence of head lice, including adhering to the law and what to do with the items and surrounding area that may have been exposed.

  • Inspectors, Inspections & Fines, Oh My!  Did you know that salon inspections are being performed throughout Ohio?  This class provides an overview of the inspection process, a presentation of the top 10 violations found in Ohio salons and spas, and a demonstration of the proper sanitation and disinfection method.

The HairDirections Game Show!!!

What is the most fun way to fulfill your safety and sanitation CE requirements?  Attending a Game Show!!!  The lights, the music, the cheesy announcer – it’s time for the HairDirections Game Show!!!  The HairDirections Game Show is a fun class where you can play along.  You will keep track of your own score as we go through a series of humorous, colorful, and informative questions covering several practical scenarios that you may encounter in the salon environment.

Do you have questions about Ohio Cosmetology CE requirements and classes?

If so, here are answers to some of the most common questions

How can I tell if a class is approved by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology?

It’s important to select a continuing education (CE) class that is approved by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology for your license type, or it will not count towards your CE license renewal requirements. Here are three ways you can check if a particular class is approved:

  1. Get a copy of the actual course approval letter that was provided by the cosmetology board. You can download a copy of HairDirections’ approval letter for our online cosmetology CE class by clicking this link.   You can also find details about this CE class above, and how to get all 8 CE hours.
  2. Contact the CE provider and ask them if the CE class you are interested in has been approved by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology for your license type
  3. Check the list of approved classes on the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology’s web site

Can I complete my Ohio Cosmetology CE online?

Yes, you can complete all 8 hours of your Ohio Cosmetology Continuing Education online as long as the class is approved by the board for your license type.  For example, the online CE class listed at the top of this page is approved for Ohio Cosmetologists, Advanced Cosmetologists, Cosmetology Independent Contractors, Hair Designers, Advanced Hair Designers, and Hair Designer Independent Contractors. Ohio licensees have to complete 8 CE hours per renewal.  You are required to complete 1 of your 8 CE hours by taking a free laws and rules class offered by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology.  You can complete the other 7 required CE hours by registering for the class listed at the top of this page.  After you register for this class, we will email you a link to the free 1 hour class offered by the Board (for a total of 8 CE hours).  Click here to register.

Online classes can be a convenient way to complete your CE, and they usually cost a lot less than attending a live class. Technology has progressed to the stage where content rich online CE classes are now possible that include videos, animated graphics, music, and other really fun elements.  Some of these online classes also let you finish over multiple sittings, continuing where you left off when you return later.

How will the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology know that I took your CE Class?

HairDirections will report your CE hours to the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology, along with your name and license number.  You will also immediately receive a certificate of completion when you finish your class that you can download or print.  You can use this certificate as proof that you have taken an Ohio online cosmetology CE class that fulfills your license renewal requirements.

What should I do with my certificate?

The board requires you to keep your OH cosmetology CE certificate of completion (that we will provide) for a period of two license renewals. This means you should keep your certificate in a safe place where you will be able to find it several years after you take the CE class in case you are audited by the cosmetology board, and need to produce a copy of it.

When should I complete my CE?

Ohio Cosmetology Continuing Education classes for the 2017-2019 biennium must be taken between February 1, 2017 and January 15, 2019.  You read that correctly, the January 15 completion date is a new requirement (it used to be January 31).  We recommend that you complete your CE early so you can find a class that is a good match for you, and finish it before the license renewal deadline.

Do all Ohio Cosmetologists and Advanced Cosmetologists have to complete CE?

Almost all Ohio cosmetology licensees will have to complete 8 hours of continuing education before they renew their license every two years. However, there are a few exceptions, and you do not have to take CE before your renewal if you fall in to one of these four categories:

  1. It is your first license renewal (i.e. you became licensed for the first time during the current renewal period and it will be the first time you have ever had to renew your license)
  2. Your license is officially in escrow (although you will have to complete CE to get your license out of escrow)
  3. You will be sixty-five or older before January thirty-first of a renewal period
  4. The board may waive, or extend the period for completing, any continuing education requirement if a licensee applies to the board and provides proof of being unable to complete CE within the time allowed due to certain reasons deemed acceptable to the board (contact the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology for more information if you believe you may fall into this cosmetology CE category)

What has to be covered in my Ohio Cosmetology CE class?

The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology gives quite a bit of latitude when it comes to the material that can be covered in a CE class.  However, there have been two major changes for the 2019 renewal.

First major change: Two (2) of the eight (8) hours of CE must be education on safety and sanitation. The CE class listed on the top of this page includes the new safety and sanitation requirement.

Second major change: One (1) of the eight (8) hours must be on Board laws and rules.  This 1 hour laws and rules CE class can only be provided by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology.   Licensees should visit the Board’s website for this one (1) hour free course.

The remaining 5  CE hours can cover a variety of topics such as haircolor, hair design, hair cutting, salon business methods and more.  Remember, whatever class you select has to be approved by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology for your specific license type, or it will not count towards your CE license renewal requirements.

What CE do I need if I hold multiple cosmetology licenses?

Licensees that hold multiple personal licenses, in more than one branch of cosmetology, must complete the continuing education requirements for each separate license. The completed continuing education must correspond with the applicable license (for example, a course that is only approved for a cosmetology license may not be applied toward the required CE for an esthetician license).
